As human individuals, we've established that our words have extreme power. But the words (and hurt) we allow to seep deepest into our own psyches and souls, are the words we speak to ourselves.
There are so many ways that we short-sell our own humanity. We pick at our own skin until blood flows; we make cuts that no one can heal, because we've cut the holes ourselves--and we're still holding the knife in and won't let go.
If a certain presidential candidate has offended you, or made you angry to the point that you have shaken with anger -- as I have -- then I want to challenge you to try something different. Think about the ways you've belittled yourself. Think about the shame you've heaped on your own shoulders. Think about the caricature you paint of your own faults or short-comings. How harsh and heavy and not-life-giving are your own thoughts about yourself, and to yourself?
Tonight, I set the pages to a year-old journal on fire. (Literally; I took a lighter, sat on my balcony, and watched the flame lick and swallow the pages). It was a journal that recounted four months in 2015 that were filled to the brim with extreme self-doubt, self-loathing, self-inflicted shame, hate, and pity. There was nothing good to be remembered in those pages, except for the fact that the beliefs I perpetuated about myself were extremely harmful.
I watched the fire burn the pages, and I put the ashes in a jar in my room. It is to remember that lies cannot stay alive if I don't let them. Because when I set fire to those pages, they turned black; the flame did not endure; the pages shrunk (as if hiding) and the words were charred. Lies cannot live when we set them up against true Light. They shrink and hide and run.
Remember that your words matter. Remember that you, too, are worth standing up for, and fighting for. You are worth so much more than your own heckling; your own cutting; your own whispers of self-loathing and hatred.
You are gorgeous. You are powerful. You are capable--of so much more than you believe. You are ready. You are good. You are learning. You are loved. You are whole--and broken; and you are beautiful because of both.
So burn something. You're worth the fire.
